The 5 Best Japanese Restaurants in Bangkok
How We Picked
Menu
Of course, the first thing we assessed is the restaurant’s menu. Since it’s a Japanese restaurant, it should offer more Japanese cuisine than any other food.
Taste
We looked for Japanese restaurants that serve authentic Japanese flavors.
Ambiance
We looked for Japanese restaurants that give off the Japanese vibe. In addition, we assessed the cleanliness and decorations of the establishment.
Service and staff
We evaluated restaurants that exhibit professionalism and provide high-quality service.
Client satisfaction
We assessed the degree of satisfaction past customers had with the service based on surveys and personal experience.

Pros
- Operating for more than 30 years
- Spacious restaurant
- Serves a variety of Japanese dishes
- Has private rooms
- Wait staff is helpful and accommodating
- Food is fresh
Cons
- Expensive menu rates
Shogun Japanese Restaurant has been operating for more than 30 years now. It offers delicious Japanese food served in a welcoming environment.
Sushi, udon, and maki are all on the menu, which is quite usual for a Japanese restaurant. In addition, the food was fresh, as expected, and we weren’t disappointed with the flavors.
There are a lot of choices on the restaurant’s menu, which we liked since some Japanese restaurants only offer famous Japanese dishes such as sushi.
The location is spacious and features a sizable space for special events. It’s perfect for gatherings with friends, family, or work.
The tables are neatly arranged, with each table in the communal area having its own private space. In addition, it also offers private rooms for guests.
Although the pricing is on the mid-higher end, we believe it is fair given the quality of the food. So, if you’re craving Japanese cuisine but don’t have the budget, then we recommend going to local sushi bars instead.
The crew is helpful and courteous, offers good service, and consistently meets all of their customers’ needs. However, it took a while for them to serve us our order, which we found a bit inconvenient.
2. Zuma Bangkok

Pros
- Has three kitchens that offer a variety of menus
- Lounge is open until late at night
- Spacious restaurant that can hold large gatherings
- Establishment gives off a Japanese vibe
Cons
- Poor customer service
- Expensive menu rates
Based on the traditional Japanese izakaya dining style, the Zuma restaurant at the St. Regis Bangkok offers an elegant yet delightful casual dining experience.
The restaurant provides distinctive spaces ideal for every kind of occasion.
The menu consists of authentic but vintage Japanese cuisine. Its three kitchens — the main kitchen, the sushi counter, and the robata grill — are represented on the menu in a variety of meals.
The sushi counter serves a range of fresh market sashimi, nigiri, and maki. On the other hand, there are several grilled meat, fish, and vegetable dishes available at the robata grill.
It also has a cocktail bar that lets you enjoy a variety of sake and Japanese whiskies.
The outside terrace at Zuma is another feature that we adore. It can hold up to 60 people, making it ideal for gatherings.
Also, the restaurant’s lounge is great since it’s open until late at night, with the DJ hyping up the ambiance with some beats.
Moreover, the atmosphere of the restaurant is reminiscent of a Japanese garden, while the building itself has an open kitchen made of natural stone.
However, Zuma’s customer service is something we did not enjoy, and it negatively affected our total satisfaction. The staff was unfriendly and gave new customers minimal attention.
Another drawback is its price. We struggled a little with budgeting because everything was pretty expensive.
3. Tensui
Address: 33 Soi Sukhumvit 16, Khwaeng Khlong Toei, Khet Khlong Toei, Bangkok, Thailand
Opening Hours: Open daily- LUNCH 11:30 AM – 2: 00 PM, DINNER 5: 30 – 10: 00 PM

Pros
- Serves quality Japanese cuisine
- Has Japanese garden that adds to the ambiance
- Private rooms are available
Cons
- Prices vary depending on the schedule
- Inconsistent way of serving the customers
- Booking issues
Nothing is ever more reassuring than enjoying a decent dinner that is well worth the cost. Tensui serves delicious, authentic Japanese meals of the right quality, combined with fresh seafood.
It is a spot where comfort and food go hand in hand. It lets you enjoy the best tastes of Japan in a setting of traditional beauty and harmony of senses.
When it comes to the atmosphere, the restaurant is excellent with its Japanese garden outside; it emanates the peacefulness that most guests look for.
The staff is really attentive and friendly. However, the crew’s workload causes them to become less focused, which is not acceptable but fairly reasonable.
If you want some privacy or simply don’t want to hang around with other customers, you can reserve a private room.
Since the restaurant becomes busy and you don’t want to wait if you’re hungry, we advise making reservations in advance rather than walking in.
However, when we tried to contact the restaurant for bookings, it seemed like the customer service was busy, and we had to wait a while for them to respond.
Another drawback that we noticed is its rates. Tensui offers a menu that is beyond a typical person’s budget for a meal.
Plus, the rates vary depending on the schedule. The prices are lower on lunch compared to the dinner menu.
4. Teppen
Address: 47/4 Tep Pen Consulting (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Soi Sathorn 8, North Sathorn Road, Silom, Bangrak, Bangkok 10500
Opening Hours: Open daily- LUNCH 11:30 AM -2:00 PM, DINNER 5:30 PM- 10:00 PM

Pros
- Offers special deals that are redeemable
- Serves a variety of izakaya-style dishes
- Fair price
- Provides generous serving
- Has several branches across Thailand
Cons
- Noisy environment
- Limited selection on the lunch menu and wine list
- Establishment is a bit unclean
Teppen is a Japanese restaurant that is set to provide a top-notch dining experience in a lively, fashionable, and traditional setting based on the concept of “Food Entertainment,” which is exclusive to Thailand.
The restaurant serves a variety of izakaya-style cuisine, with its signature rice bowl featuring a variety of toppings and a specialty egg yolk.
The service is excellent; everybody can enjoy grilling a straw or watching a warayaki exhibition.
However, we must say the lunch menu and wine selection are somewhat disappointing due to their limited selection.
Nevertheless, the lunch dishes are excellent, with a generous serving (sometimes served in a bigger portion) and a fair price. However, it’s frustrating that there aren’t more a la carte options available.
The restaurant also has several branches across Thailand, which is great since people who want to try out its food won’t have to go to Bangkok in order to do so.
Another fantastic feature of Teppen is its special offers, which allow you to earn points that may be redeemed for dining, depending on how many points you accumulated. For each 9THB paid, one point is awarded.
We don’t particularly enjoy the restaurant’s noise level or the fact that the personnel sometimes shouts at one another. Additionally, the area could use some cleaning.

Pros
- Offers unlimited a la carte weekend lunch
- Gives off vintage elegant Japanese vibe
- Serves delicious wagyu beef
Cons
- Inconsistent quality of customer service
- Expensive rates
Kisso is a must-try if you’re looking for the best Japanese restaurant in Bangkok. Its exquisite salmon dishes, Japanese bento sets, and sushi delights will definitely satisfy your Japanese cravings.
Our attention was drawn primarily to their unlimited a la carte weekend lunch style menu, which ranges from appetizers, sushi and sashimi, grilled entrees, sukiyaki, and noodles to desserts.
A glass of sparkling wine, coffee, and hot or cold Japanese green tea is included in the price of the unlimited lunch, which is THB 2,200+ per adult. This promo, however, is only available every Saturday and Sunday from noon until 2:30 PM.
However, if you’re not into seafood, then you might want to skip its unlimited weekend lunch. Additionally, we think it is excessive to charge THB 2,200+ for a 2-hour course.
On the other hand, we particularly loved the restaurant’s take on wagyu beef; it gives off that Japanese feeling and taste we were looking for.
Speaking of the Japanese vibe, the restaurant’s atmosphere brings you to vintage and elegant place where you can feel like you’re on a trip to Japan.
Additionally, the staff was nice; they provided us with all the requests we asked for.
However, we heard that in some cases the staff aren’t that accommodating to customers.
