Pros

  • Largest weekend market in the world
  • Vast selection of products
  • Very accessible location
  • Sellers can speak English

Cons

  • Too big to roam in one day
  • High risk of being pickpocketed

We start our list with our best choice, the Chatuchak Weekend Market.

It opened in 1942 and is considered the largest weekend market in the world — in our opinion, no other market has yet to overcome this establishment that has been a huge part of Thai culture.

This flea market has 27 projects or divisions with more than 8,000 market stalls. You can find anything here from fruits, vegetables, and cooked food to clothes, bags, etc.

Everyone who frequents this market (including the CleverThai team!) does not exaggerate when they say that a day isn’t enough to fully roam the whole premises. The discovery of new things does not end!

Since it’s a well-established market, one can navigate through the premises with the help of maps and signs around.

Store sellers can also speak English (though of differing mastery), so it’s easy for farangs to ask for directions.

Many would agree that this has become a tourist trap, thereby, it’s uncommon for store owners to charge higher prices for foreigners. However, one can always try to haggle with sellers for the best deals.

Just make sure to wear clothing that’s comfortable, and not too flashy. Keep your valuables secured as you might come upon pickpockets, especially when the place gets crowded.

Pros

  • Vast array of products
  • Huge lot area
  • Well-organised stalls
  • Low to moderate pricing

Cons

  • Poor parking management
  • Not enough parking slots

World Market in the Thawi Watthana district is a wholesale and retail marketplace that looks like a series of huge warehouses.

Like any other market, it has many products available daily, like different types of produce, meats, seafood, and other general merchandise.

Its flea market, which is usually filled with food and clothing stalls, operates from Friday to Sunday, starting at 5:00 PM.

You’ll get to try street food and buy clothing and accessories for inexpensive prices, which is why this flea market is flocked to during its days of operations.

There’s just one thing we don’t like: parking management is not that good; there’s always traffic congestion in and out of their parking space.

Better use public transportation, especially during the days of the flea market, as parking becomes scarce due to the influx of people and vehicles.

What we like about this market is its clean premises — sometimes you won’t believe that you’re in an actual market.

Each product category has its own “zone” or designated area, so it’s easy to navigate; you can make your most efficient shopping route!

Customers continue to visit World Market because it’s a great crossroad of over 10 thoroughfares.

Products here also range from inexpensive to moderately priced, so it can be a haven for budget-conscious shoppers.

Pros

  • Comfortable market experience
  • Does not get too crowded
  • Great for families and the elderly
  • Vast selection of products
  • Organised and clean

Cons

  • A bit more expensive
  • Parking slots run out

Bon Marche Market Park is for those who want a more comfortable and not-so-flea market experience. It opened in 1999 and is a massive part of the development of the Chatuchak district community.

It’s an establishment not very known to tourists, so the place doesn’t get too crowded.

This market has six buildings that have the following types of establishments: one for jewellery, two buildings of shopping plazas, a section with astrologers and fortune tellers, one with all the restaurants, and another for general merchandise.

We love this place’s overall look and ambience — it has an artificial lake and fountain in the middle of the whole lot and is very clean and organised.

Our sentiments are noticeably shared by the senior citizens who frequent Bon Marche for shopping and dining.

Wheelchair rental is available, and shoppers can even bring their pets. Events like unique bazaars also happen occasionally, making this market’s event calendar more interesting.

We understand that Bon Marche can’t maintain this comfortable market experience without product prices that are more expensive than average. Therefore, this isn’t the best choice if you’re tight on budget.

We just hope that the market management will be able to add more parking slots, as the current 500 spaces tend to become full during the peak market days of Monday, Saturday, and Sunday.

4. Wat Thepleela School Market

Contact Details: Tel: (+66) 08-1791-5800, 08-6303-1891

Pros

  • Low prices
  • Has food and clothing stalls
  • Great location

Cons

  • Only open on weekends
  • Gets very crowded
  • No parking for cars

When visiting the Wat Thepleela Temple in the Bang Kapi district during the weekend, you can also drop by the Wat Thepleela School Market.

As its name indicates, this flea market is inside the Wat Thepleela School at soi Ramkhamhaeng 39. The nearest and most notable landmark is Ramkhamhaeng University.

The flea market only exists on Saturdays and Sundays and is open at 3:00 PM. Here, you’ll usually find stalls selling street food and other merchandise under the sun (mostly clothing and accessories) for very low prices.

This flea market is a haven not just for tourists or students near the area but also for locals looking for new places to explore.

It gets very crowded here, given the number of stalls and how compact these are arranged. We don’t like that customers are left to walk on very narrow paths, making the market look more crowded than it is.

We don’t advise going here by car because there’s nowhere to park for vehicles, but motorcycles can do.

Store owners are also nice and are willing to bargain. (However, would you still want to bargain for an already low price?)

Overall, we highly recommend visiting this flea market at least once.

5. Chang Chui Plane Night Market

Pros

  • Beautiful premises
  • Flea market several days a week
  • Great for contemporary art lovers
  • Isn’t crowded
  • Free entrance and parking

Cons

  • Location quite far from main roads
  • Might not be for everyone’s taste

Chang Chui (or literally, “messy artisan”) in Bang Phlat district is another establishment with a not-so-flea-market feel on our list.

It hosts a flea market that’s perfect for those in the contemporary art community from Tuesday to Friday.

TIME Magazine listed Chang Chui as one of the World’s Greatest Places in 2018, just a year after it opened, so we’re not kidding about how beautiful this place looks.

The centrepiece of this 2.7-hectare market is a retired Lockheed L-1011 TriStar plane.

The flea market happens around the aeroplane. You’ll see different stalls selling collectible items, toys, clothing, and footwear that can be handmade, second-hand, vintage, or have unique styles and designs.

The whole complex’s industrial, upcycled aesthetic is eye candy, making the shopping experience feel more premium and inspiring.

You can also do a food crawl through Chang Chui’s restaurants and unleash your inner artist by appreciating art or photographing your visit.

We’re glad there is no entrance fee to enter Chang Chui — we can spend more on the flea market. Parking is also free.

However, we’re not fans of the market’s location. Since it’s pretty far from the main roads, private vehicles or taxis are the only feasible means of travelling here.

Plus points that it doesn’t get crowded, though.
