Pros

  • Has splash-proof napkins
  • English-speaking staff
  • Best known for its mud crab dishes
  • Excellent customer service

Cons

  • Reservations are required
  • Tricky roadside parking
  • Pricier than local seafood restaurants in Bangkok

Ministry of Crab is considered one of the best restaurants in Sri Lanka by a lot of people. This restaurant features export-quality Sri Lankan mud crabs, which are flown into Bangkok regularly.

Interestingly, this Ministry of Crab was founded by cricket players Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, and Chef Dharshan Munidasa. The first branch of this esteemed dining spot was established in a preserved four-centuries-old Dutch hospital in the heart of Colombo.

It is also noteworthy that Chef Dharshan Munidasa is currently the head chef of the MoC branch in Bangkok. Since he is Japanese-Sri Lankan, he takes pride in employing meticulous Japanese cooking techniques in preparing the dishes.

Although it is called the Ministry of Crab, this place is also a go-to for shrimp enthusiasts. For example, the Clay Pot Prawn Curry is a hot tiger prawn dish slathered in a flavorful sauce and served with charcoal-grilled bread.

For gourmands craving perfectly steamed crabs, we recommend trying out the Pepper Crab and Garlic Chilli Crab. The former is served with peppercorn-based sauce, while the latter is a multi-cultural experience with Italian olive oil, Sri Lankan chili flakes, and Japanese soy sauce.

On the other hand, you should note that only seafood dishes are served at MoC. This is something to take note of when planning gatherings here, so consider friends or family who are allergic to seafood.

Although on the pricier side, the Ministry of Crab branch in Bangkok is a must-visit for those who love eating crab dishes. Moreover, the exemplary customer service will surely make your dining experience even better!

Pros

  • 5-star hotel buffet line
  • Great dishes of seafood
  • Also serves sushi and beef, lamb, turkey, and chicken roasts
  • Has a wide variety of dishes
  • Excellent service

Cons

  • Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • Pricey buffet and a la carte menu

Next on our list is a local institution and one of the best-loved seafood restaurants in Bangkok. Located at the Mandarin Oriental, this restaurant features a five-star buffet line in an exclusive setting.

What we like most about Lord Jim’s is the wide variety of dishes available at the buffet. The lunchtime offerings include unlimited seafood, international dishes, roast meats, and the restaurant’s classics such as pan-fried foie gras.

The dishes offered at night slightly differ from the lunch buffet by having an available à la carte menu of sharing plates. This option allows customers to choose prime cuts of meat and sustainably sourced fish cooked over a wood-fired grill.

Aside from the good food and great dining experience, the uninterrupted view of the Chao Praya River is another highlight at Lord Jim’s.

During the daytime, customers can enjoy the busy scenes at the river. When night falls, the place transforms into a vibrant and relaxed setting because of the nighttime skyline and the city lights reflected on the river.

However, this spectacular experience comes at a steep price, with the buffet costing 3,500 Baht on weekends and 2,500 Baht on weekdays.

Despite that, given its location in a five-star hotel, great variety of dishes, and high-quality food, Lord Jim’s is a  must-visit for locals celebrating special occasions or food lovers visiting Bangkok.

Pros

  • Great for deliveries
  • Reasonable prices
  • Hip atmosphere
  • Wide variety of seafood dishes

Cons

  • Long waiting time when ordering food
  • Small establishment
  • Closed on Mondays

Surf by Seafood Express was established in 2012 and has since provided the Bangkok crowd fresh and great-quality seafood specials. Moreover, the variety in the menu is notable, featuring a wide diversity of fish, crab, shrimp, shellfish, and squid dishes.

An eye-catching all-blue establishment along Rama IX, we decided to give Surf by Seafood Express a shot because of its famous Crab Fried Rice and Chili Fish. Thankfully, it did not disappoint in providing reasonably-priced fresh and delicious seafood dishes.

We also like that Surf by Seafood Express also serves set menus and a good range of bento boxes. These options make this restaurant a popular choice for food delivery in Bangkok.

Furthermore, it’s great that Surf by Seafood Express capitalized on its popularity as a food delivery option. Customers can order through Facebook, Line, or mobile, with deliveries of freshly-cooking seafood meals taking an hour in the city.

On the other hand, dine-in customers also face long waiting hours. We think the management can improve the service time since orders usually take over 30 minutes to be released from the kitchen.

Moreover, although the place is well-decorated and has a hip atmosphere, we found it lacking in space since it can only fit around ten people. There is outdoor seating available, but it’s not comfortable when the weather is hot and humid.

Pros

  • Large portions
  • Authentic Thai seafood dishes
  • Beautiful and elegant location
  • Reasonable prices

Cons

  • Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays
  • Confusing parking space at W Building

For modern Thai seafood specials, don’t forget to check out Paii. Located in one of the iconic Bangkok landmarks, The House of Sathorn, this establishment has a casual but elegant dining concept complemented by the colonial architecture of the century-old building.

In an old-fashioned place surrounded by modern buildings, we were glad to experience modern Thai cuisine that focuses on seafood dishes. Notably, Paii serves authentic dishes and not fusion ones.

Another thing we like about the dishes served at Paii is their innovative interpretation, making the traditional dishes more interesting without taking away the authentic taste.

We recommend checking out the Paii Experience Menu, which is suitable for two people. This menu gives the customer the option to choose eight dishes with a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and is priced at 3,999++ Baht.

Another great thing about the venue is the elegant indoor dining room which exudes an elegant vibe. If you want a more relaxed and cozy vibe, choose to dine at the outdoor tables.

We also found the service commendable. It’s especially great that the staff is helpful with wine pairing recommendations, showing a good amount of knowledge of what they are serving.

Finally, we like that Paii is only a four-minute walk from Saint Louis or Chong Nonsi BTS stations. There is also an available parking space in the basement of the W building, although it has a confusing layout.

Pros

  • Famous for its Fried Curry Crab
  • Established in 1969
  • Good variety of dishes
  • Has eight outlets in Bangkok

Cons

  • Service varies depending on the branch
  • Noisy during peak hours
  • Long queue at some outlets

If you have been in Bangkok for a while, you’ve probably heard about Somboon Seafood. Since its establishment in 1969, it has grown to have eight locations in the capital.

Notably, many locals would fondly declare that the signature dish of Somboon Seafood, the Fried Curry Crab, is legendary. Having tasted it ourselves, we can definitely say that this place is a must-visit for seafood fans, especially crab lovers.

Customers dining at Somboon Seafood rarely pass up the signature dish of succulent large local crabs fried with curry sauce, cayenne pepper, and scallions. We recommend eating it with the fragrant jasmine rice for a complete experience.

Aside from a variety of other crab dishes, this popular restaurant chain also serves other typical Chinese seafood. Most items on the menu take inspiration from the street food scene at Yaowarat, Chinatown.

Other dishes worth trying include the Tom Yung Goong, Fish Maw with Crab Meat in Gravy, Deep Fried Grouper with Crispy Basil, Steamed Fish with Lime, Chili, and Garlic,  and Roasted Freshwater Prawns with Glass Noodles.

However, we must warn you that there is a modus operandi of unscrupulous taxi drivers bringing unknowing tourists to fake Somboon branches. Visitors should take care and be informed of the legitimate locations before embarking on a trip.

Finally, we appreciate the affordable prices at Somboon Seafood. Given the delicious and high-quality dishes, visiting a branch is certainly worth your while!
