The 5 Most Popular Pubs in Bangkok

The 5 Most Popular Pubs in Bangkok

How We Chose

Atmosphere

The atmosphere of a pub is a make or break for many people. We only picked those with good and clean facilities, good bartenders, and a relaxing ambiance where customers can chill out and have fun.

Menu

We also checked out the menu of each pub, examining their liquor spread and available food options.

Value

Taking in plenty of beer and food during a night out can burn a hole in your pockets, so we considered the cost factor for each pub. Those with good portions, specials, and socializing events get plus points.

Pros

  • Good deals during happy hour
  • Cozy and relaxing atmosphere
  • Big food portions
  • Great deals during happy hour
  • Wide whiskey selection

Cons

  • Slow service
  • Can be more consistent in the quality of dishes

Scruffy Murphy’s Irish Pub has everything we could have expected from a typical Irish pub, from traditional Irish food to a vast selection of whiskey. Notably, this establishment is the only one of its kind which is fully Irish-owned and managed.

We were pleased to have a casual and authentic Irish experience right in Asoke. The dark-colored walls and wooden furniture contribute a comfortable and relaxing vibe perfect for chatting, winding down, or playing pool.

Additionally, the pub regularly holds live screenings of games on days of major matches. We noticed that regulars drop by to catch game highlights of their favorite teams.

Another notable thing about Scruffy Murphy’s Irish Pub is its whiskey selection, considered the largest in Bangkok. We were glad to see famous classics like Tullamore Dew and Jameson and boutique brands such as Teelings and Pogues.

Since this pub is known for serving genuine Irish meals, we’d like to recommend trying their Guinness Stew and Braised Beef for dinner. For a complete experience, top it off with their homemade Bread and Butter pudding for dessert.

On the other hand, the remaining items on the menu consist of typical pub fares, like hotdogs, burgers, and chicken wings. We like the portion sizes, which are a steal when you order during happy hour.

From several visits to this pub, we gathered that its cooking staff can be more consistent with providing the same quality of dishes each time. Furthermore, the service is quite slow, and it wouldn’t hurt for the wait staff to be a bit friendlier.

Pros

  • Ample parking space
  • Good location near Thong Lor BTS station
  • Large food portions
  • Offers excellent Steak and Guinness Pie
  • Good place for ciders
  • Attentive staff

Cons

  • Long waiting time during peak hours
  • Draught beer easily sells out

Located in the exclusive and trendy neighborhood of Thong Lor, The Old English Pub is one of the popular spots for expats that offers an authentic British pub experience. It’s a recent addition to the Bangkok pub scene, and we think it has the potential to become one of the best.

What we like most about The Old English Pub is its extensive selection of beers. They have locally-made, imported, and craft beers, which are served bottled and on draught.

However, they seem to quickly run out of draught beers like Guinness and IPA, although it is attributed to the supply chain issue in Thailand. If you feel like trying something else, the ciders at this pub are delicious.

Additionally, its food selection is quite decent since it serves traditional pub fare and finger food like pizza, nachos, and quesadillas. We think the star of the menu is the Steak and Guinness Pie, which is technically an Irish fare but wonderfully done in this pub.

We also liked the novelty of taking pictures in the featured decor of the pub, which is the iconic red telephone booth. The tables are also dotted with miniature lamp versions of the booth, which felt quite cliched.

Overall, The Old English Pub is a nice place for dining, drinking, meeting new people, and watching sports in a chill environment. There’s also a live band that plays good music at night, but it sometimes distracts from the game commentaries shown on TV.

Pros

  • Accessible location, near Nana BTS station
  • Superb live band every 9:00 pm
  • Great selection of beer
  • Elegantly-designed British pub
  • Established in 1987

Cons

  • Closed on Mondays

Next on our list is one of the most elegantly-designed pubs we’ve visited, The Huntsman. It is also one of the oldest pubs in Bangkok, having been around since 1987.

In its long history in the pub scene in the city, The Huntsman established itself as a go-to for authentic pub food, expertly mixed cocktails, and chilled draught beer.

Upon descending into the basement of the Landmark hotel, we were pleasantly surprised at the shift in the scenery. With acres of elegant dark wood and button-back leather seats, we were immersed in the atmosphere of a traditional British pub, forgetting the tropical climate outside.

The Huntsman is a busy establishment, offering a lively ambiance, accentuated with superb music by a house band playing the latest hits. Customers can even dance along on the large dance floor near the stage.

Although a British pub, we like that The Huntsman offers Irish beers like Kilkenny and Guinness. Happy Hour starts at three o’clock in the afternoon, and we recommend visiting here around that time to get drinks at half the price.

Aside from the usual beer, cocktails, and pub fare, we were pleasantly surprised that this pub also serves traditional Thai food. However, we found that the best food items on the menu are the Cottage Pie and French Fries.

Finally, The Huntsman is also a popular spot because of its Sunday roast lunch buffet. Many families visit the pub to enjoy good, unlimited food in a relaxing atmosphere, so we’re looking forward to dropping by on a Sunday to try it!

Pros

  • Shows various sporting events from all over the globe
  • Plenty of pool tables
  • Has a VIP room
  • Good variety of food
  • Comfortable and welcoming atmosphere

Cons

  • Some staff are unfriendly

If you’re looking for a sports bar that serves a variety of beer with good food, take a trip to the Nana area of the Sukhumvit Road. There you will find one of the best sports bars in Bangkok, The Sportsman.

At first, we were intrigued as to why this pub is considered by many locals and foreigners as the best in the area. Upon visiting, we noted that The Sportsman lives up to its name.

The Sportsman stands out from other pubs with its ten large HD projector screens and 22 LED TV screens in the venue. We like that it aims to give a good experience for sports fans who want to catch all major games all year round.

Notably, this pub has six separate viewing areas. This setup is convenient for its many customers since twenty different sports can be simultaneously viewed, whether golf, motorsports, horse riding, soccer, table tennis, boxing, rugby, or cricket.

Another thing that we like about The Sportsman is the wide variety of games available in the venue. There are plenty of pool tables and darts, and foosball and Golden Tree Gold.

As for the food, we like that it offers Thai and Indian cuisines aside from the usual British pub fare. These are also reasonably priced, ranging from 150 Baht to 500 Baht per meal.

Finally, we appreciate that The Sportsman offers a decent selection of local and imported craft beers, cocktails, and wines. Sports fans who enjoy non-alcoholic beverages can also enjoy the Stowford Press and Thatchers Gold Cider available on the menu.

Pros

  • Award-winning pub
  • A popular venue for jazz and blues music
  • Near Victory Monument BTS station
  • Serves good Thai dishes

Cons

  • Short operating hours

If you’re up for a night of jazz that will perfectly accompany your drinks, visit the Saxophone Pub and Restaurant. Since its establishment 25 years ago, this place has been considered one of the best and oldest venues for jazz and blues in Bangkok.

It’s noteworthy that Saxophone Pub & Restaurant has won the Best Pub in Thailand Award from the UK Metro Magazine and also the Best Pub in Asia by Asiaxpat.com. This place is also popular with both locals and foreign jazz aficionados.

Aside from being a great spot for jazz and booze, we appreciate that this pub is in an accessible location, near Victory Monument BTS station. The two-story establishment is difficult to miss, with its brick facade and string lights.

On the inside of the building, its European-style decor with musical instruments dotted along the wall provides the perfect backdrop to a lively music scene. On any night, high-quality local live bands and top artists are featured onstage.

Apart from the top-notch blues and jazz scene, Saxophone Pub & Restaurant also services a range of beers, whiskeys, and cocktails. Thai food is also available, and many customers have praised their tasty Pad Thai with chicken and prawns.

Finally, check out its website before planning a visit to see who’s playing next! A night at Saxophone Pub & Restaurant is always made memorable with great drinks and top-notch music from talented artists.
