Pros

  • Best for swing dance lessons
  • Attractive vintage studio
  • Serves cocktails and coffee during social dances
  • Expert teachers
  • Good for beginners and serious dancers

Cons

  • Very limited operating hours
  • Classes only open every two months

If you want to be transported to the parties from the 1920s to the 1940s, you should not miss The Hop! This studio-slash-events place along Silom Road focuses on teaching and living the art of swing dance.

Run by eight passionate teachers, The Hop regularly holds open classes in the form of social dances every Thursday and Saturday. We like how this option is perfect for beginners and newbies since it includes a 30-minute beginner class for only 200 Baht.

For those who want to delve into swing dancing, the instructors at The Hop are experts in all its forms, such as Lindy Hop, Charleston, Blues, Tap, and Authentic Jazz Dance.

We also appreciate that these professional swing dancers are all amiable teachers who do their best so students enjoy their time on the dance floor. Many beginners also mentioned that they found the instructions easy to follow because of the clear demonstrations and thorough guidance.

On the other hand, its swing dance courses only open every two months, and students can gradually work their way up to the levels. The good news is that bringing a partner is not required – perfect for those flying solo!

Another thing that we like about The Hop is its venue. Its dark wooden floors, velvet curtains, painted red walls, and dim lighting makes for the perfect vintage setup for swing dancing.

Interestingly, live bands sometimes grace the open classes, which make for a more immersive experience. Don’t miss out on trying the cocktails and authentic Italian espresso, which are also highlights during these events!

Pros

  • Has two locations
  • Wide variety of classes
  • Clean and modern facilities

Cons

  • Classes can get too crowded
  • No bathrooms and showers

rumPUREE is the first studio in Thailand to hold a wide variety of world dance classes. From classical dance like ballet and jazz to Bollywood, Bellydance, and pole dance, students can find almost all kinds of popular styles here.

That said, we think this studio is perfect for adults who want to try various dance styles and switch things up daily. Students can purchase daily, weekly, or monthly passes, and they can attend any class available at rumPUREE.

Aside from various world dances, rumPUREE also offers dance-style workouts for those who want to try dancing for fitness. We appreciate that the classes are varied enough to include Zumba, Piloxing, and Fit Yoga, among others.

On the other hand, rumPUREE also offers an option for students who want to take a specific style more seriously. However, this requires a full-course subscription, costing around 3,000 Baht for a six-week course.

We should mention that some students we surveyed felt that several group classes were too fast-paced for beginners. Since most lessons are choreography-based, it takes some getting used to for people who need time to learn the steps.

On the upside, serious students who want to learn at their own pace can choose to enroll in private and group classes.

Although rumPUREE has many positive aspects as a dance studio, we found its facilities lacking. Both its locations do not have private bathrooms and showers, and we found this disappointing and impractical since dancing works up quite a sweat!

3. Urban Dance Studio

Pros

  • Best for urban dance, street jazz, and old-school hip-hop lessons
  • Affordable rates
  • 11-minute walk from BTS Asoke station

Cons

  • Limited dance styles

If you’re all about tutting and krumping, pay a visit to Urban Dance Studio. As its name suggests, it specializes in urban dance lessons in Bangkok, complete with popping, locking, whacking, and breakdancing classes.

Although this style may seem complicated to those starting out to dance, the instructors at Urban Dance Studio are welcoming to all those interested in learning how to groove.

What we like most about this place is it holds classes with varying difficulty levels, including open choreography, beginner, and foundation dance lessons. The studio also offers street jazz and old-school hip-hop for those who want to try a different groove.

We also like its simple yet aesthetic rooftop studio in Sukhumvit. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer the perfect city skyline backdrop for urban dance lessons – a great way to get in the mood!

Moreover, although urban dance lessons are rare in Bangkok, we appreciate that Urban Dance Studio has cheaper rates than the other dance studios in the city. The classes here average around 450 Baht per session or 1,200 Baht for three sessions.

If you fancy committing to immersing yourself in dance, an unlimited class pass will only set you back at 6,500 Baht. On the other hand, if you want to dip your toe into this, the studio offers a first-time trial session for only 300 Baht.

Pros

  • Has been around for 30 years
  • Wide range of classes for children, teens, and adults
  • Classes are held in English and Thai
  • Licensed by the Royal Thai Government Ministry of Education
  • Has internationally trained instructors

Cons

  • No drop-in classes
  • No make-up classes for workshops
  • Charges an Annual Membership Fee

Since its establishment 30 years ago, Dance Centre School of Performing Arts has been considered a premiere school for ballet and modern dance.

For the past three decades, it has been a popular option for twinkle-toed children who wish to try ballet because of its well-structured classes.

While the little ones cannot execute serious moves quite yet, the routines taught in the classes are based on classic ballet moves and even cover basic terminology. Moreover, we appreciate that all programs are conducted in English and Thai.

We also like that there are even broader options for teens and adult learners who want to learn dance styles other than ballet. Dance Centre also holds lessons on jazz, hip-hop, contemporary dance, street dance, ballroom, Latin, and rhythmic gymnastics.

Another noteworthy aspect of Dance Centre School of Performing Arts is its certified dance instructors with impressive educational and performing backgrounds. Some of them have even undergone international training in Europe and Australia.

While we expected more rigid sessions in this school, we were pleasantly surprised that the teachers are amicable during lessons, especially when teaching children. However, more advanced ballet classes have a generally stricter and more formal atmosphere.

Interestingly, Dance Centre also holds a full range of mind and body development classes for all ages, including Chi Kung, Tai Chi Chu’an, Kung Fu, Aikido, and Hatha Yoga.

On the flip side, students are required to pay the full tuition before starting the classes. Although the fees at Dance Centre are reasonably priced, it can be quite heavy on the pocket to shell out around 7,000 Baht to 12,000 Baht at once, depending on the package.

Pros

  • Led by expert international and local instructors
  • Best for hip-hop dance lessons
  • Ample parking spaces

Cons

  • No online classes
  • No walk-ins

Next on our list is a crowd-favorite dance studio in RCA, D Maniac. Located among popular entertainment and clubbing establishments in Bangkok, this center is perfect for those who want to learn Popping, Waacking, B-Boy, and Old-School Hip-Hop.

What we found most impressive are its instructors who actively participate in world hip-hop competitions and championships. Having won several awards on the international stage is enough proof to us that the teachers in this school can walk the talk.

However, being a good dancer doesn’t directly translate to being a competent teacher, so we set out to check how the lessons go in D Maniac.

Upon visiting its facility, we were pleasantly surprised by the lofty space. It has four studios of varying sizes to accommodate different classes scheduled simultaneously and rents out a fully-equipped band studio 24/7.

We like that the bigger studios are used for the dance classes. Since the spaces accommodate 40 to 50 people, there is ample area to move comfortably during dance lessons.

Furthermore, the classes are also beginner-friendly. We like that all instructors are accommodating, adjusting to the pace of their students to make the moves easy to understand.

We also like the reasonable costs of dance lessons at D Maniac. Weekly rates cost 3,000 Baht, while monthly packages go for 7,000 Baht.

For those who want to dip their toe in hip-hop dancing, single class passes can be availed at only 500 Baht per session. Also, there are packages for three, eight, and twelve classes, which go for 1,300 Baht, 3,200 Baht, and 4,500 Baht, respectively.

On the downside, its website is often down, making class schedules and other relevant details inaccessible. Thankfully, D Maniac occasionally updates its Facebook and Instagram pages for information and updates – although a bit of scrolling down is needed.

  • Studio designed for dance classes

Cons

  • Limited types of dance compared to other studios
  • Operating hours unavailable

Rising Star Dance Studio has been around since 1996 and is a place where different individuals of all ages and nationalities can enjoy the art of dance.

The age range of their students is from 3 to adults and they’ve also taught students from over 25 nationalities.

What we like about their instructors is they method of teaching that allows and encourages their students to develop technique and artistic expression.

They specialize in classical ballet, but also offer rhythmic gymnastics, contemporary dance and jazz dance classes. Although their options for types of dance classes isn’t as extensive and diverse as other studios.

We think it’s great that they’re also multilingual and can instruct in English, Thai, and Japanese.

Their studio is also perfect for dance because it was designed specifically for dance classes so it’s equipped with high ceilings and sprung wooden floors for both the safety and comfort of all dancers.

We like that that they also give each students the chance to perform through an annual full-length ballet production to showcase what they’ve learned as well as build their confidence and gain experience!
