Pros
- Near MRT Suthisarn station
- Minimalist and Japanese-inspired
- Talented baristas
Cons
- Small establishment
- No parking space
If you are someone who enjoys the minimalist and Muji aesthetic while drinking great-tasting coffee, Halo Koffee is a must-visit. We adore how this cute shop made us feel like we were in Harajuku for a while.
The first thing we noticed about Halo Koffee is its aesthetic and warm interiors. The plain white walls are accented by beechwood trimmings, wooden furniture, and marbled countertops, which makes for a cozy coffee experience.
Moreover, its baristas are talented and skilled. We like how they displayed their knowledge about each drink, producing well-crafted coffee that tasted great.
We also like that this cafe offers a wide variety of coffee using single-origin beans. Moreover, the owners use rotating beans from around the globe and serve them as filtered or cold brews.
Notably, one of its most popular drinks is Lady Sip, an espresso-based drink mixed with fruits and vegetables. We found it unique, original, and surprisingly well-balanced, with spicy and sour notes.
If you prefer to drink coffee with milk, as most people do, we recommend the Iced Latte made from Brazilian and Lao coffee beans. This crafted brew makes for a rich, creamy drink with chocolatey undertones, even without adding syrup.
You can even bring along your non-coffee lover friends with you! They can have the full taste of Japan at Halo Koffee with the Matsuoka, an iced matcha latte using tea leaves sourced from Shizuoka.
Overall, Halo Koffee offers a memorable coffee experience with its cozy interiors and affordable brews that do not sacrifice quality. Just a tip: if you don’t like crowded places, visit this cafe during off-peak hours since they only have a couple of chairs and tables.

Pros
- Quiet and minimalist cafe
- Perfectly-roasted beans
- Also serves delicious pastries
Cons
- Closed on Tuesdays
- Staff can improve their friendliness
Phil Coffee is a crowd-favorite artisanal coffee roaster and cafe at the quiet end of Sukhumvit soi 51. Notably, this store was a runner-up at the 2018 Thailand National Roasting Championship.
Formerly located at a secluded Ekkamai alley, Phil Coffee recently moved to this more accessible location, which is a ten-minute walk from Thong Lo BTS Station. Alternatively, you can opt to ride a motorcycle into the alley for a faster commute.
Roadside parking is also available, although it’s difficult to find a good spot on busy days. You won’t miss this place due to its bright and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for hanging out with friends or working remotely.
We like the minimalist interiors at the cafe, which the owners designed to focus all the attention on their expertly-brewed selection of coffee. Phil Coffee targets serious coffee drinkers and connoisseurs who like to be delighted with various selections of beans all over the world.
Aside from serving perfectly-roasted coffee, we like that Phil Coffee also serves delicious food and desserts. Some of the crowd favorites are the waffles topped with matcha ice cream, croissants, and lemon cake.
We also like its creative take on various coffee drinks on the menu. Aside from the usual espresso-based offerings, they have exotic-sounding drinks which are presented creatively, which include the Sumatra Benar Meriah, Ethiopia Wegida Idido, and Thai Suan Ya Luang.
Overall, Phil Coffee is easily one of the best coffee shops in Bangkok where coffee aficionados can appreciate the amount of time and care its baristas put into roasting the beans.

Pros
- Chic locomotive theme all throughout the building
- Serves good coffee using various types of beans
- Friendly and hospitable staff
Cons
- Closed on Wednesdays
- Pricier than other cafes
Tales Khaosan is a compact hostel and cafe tucked away in a small alley across Wat Chana Songkhram on Khaosan Road. We are definitely on board its chic locomotive concept and retro decor.
Moreover, we appreciate its commitment to its theme through the cafe’s design on the ground floor. The entire shop looks like a train cabin with metal walls, columns of bolts, round-edged windows, and wood finishing.
The train theme even extends to the drinks on the menu. Our top choice is the Tales Coco, a creamy latte using medium-roasted coffee beans.
Additionally, there are a number of interesting drinks like the Apple Cold Brew, Appresso, and Sparkling Yuzu. Non-coffee drinkers will also enjoy an assortment of fruit sodas and teas.
On the downside, we were disappointed at the limited food options at Tales Khaosan, with only croissants, croffles, and chocolate ice cream on the menu. We expected it to have a better variety of food since it also serves as a dining spot for hostel guests.
Nonetheless, we appreciate the novelty of visiting Tales Khaosan. During its operating hours, visitors can take a peek at the mixed dorms, which ride on the capsule hotel trend.
Tales Khaosan also offers a co-working space on its third floor, which also serves as a meeting room. The entire place is also available for rent as a photoshoot space for personal and commercial use.

Pros
- Award-winning coffee shop
- Serves creative and uniquely-crafted drinks
- Accessible location near BTS Phaya Thai
- Good atmosphere
Cons
- Crowded on weekends
- Long waiting times
- Expensive coffee and food
Next on our list is Factory Coffee, a popular cafe in the heart of Bangkok, in the affluent Phaya Thai neighborhood. It is also impressive that it has won several awards, such as the 2016 & 2017 Indy Barista Championship and the 2017 & 2020 Thailand Barista Championship.
Aside from its popularity, we were drawn to its industrial loft vibe which further enticed us to enter the shop. Upon walking through the door, we were immediately enveloped by the aroma of freshly-roasted beans that furthered our excitement to try its specialty coffee.
We like the selection of creatively-crafted brews at Factory Coffee. After careful consideration, we decided to try its signature Steve Jobs, a surprisingly good combination of cold brew infused with grape juice and roasted rice.
Another drink we found interesting is the Rose Hip, a signature coffee infused with dried roses and blueberries. If you feel like trying a crowd favorite, order the Phayathai, a mix of espresso and tonic with a dash of their house lemon syrup.
On the downside, the lines are pretty long at Factory Coffee since it’s a popular spot for locals and foreigners. We were disappointed that waiting times can go for over 30 minutes during peak hours, especially on weekends.
Since the shop gets busy and crowded at times, this is not a spot for working and studying. Moreover, the concrete interiors make for louder and echoing acoustics, amping the noise to somewhat unbearable levels for those with sensitive ears.

Pros
- Supports the local coffee industry
- Good ambiance
- Staff are fluent in English
Cons
- Limited menu
- Small cafe
Roots is a micro roastery and specialty cafe that proudly offers coffee beans sourced locally. Notably, it closely works with several farming Thai families where part of their profit goes to improving the skills and livelihood of the local farmers, and this is a major plus in our books!
Another thing we like about Roots is its convenient location at The Commons, a beautifully constructed community building with plenty of open spaces.
We found the cafe quite small and cozy, with only limited seats at the bar. However, there is a wide shared space outside with plenty of tables and chairs.
We also appreciate the English-speaking staff at Roots, which made for an easier time when ordering our drinks. They are also friendly, efficient, show sufficient knowledge when asked about the blends, and make great latte art.
Roots also offers a variety of options for coffee drinkers, such as cold brew on tap, the usual espresso coffee variations, bottled cold brew, and pour-over.
On the other hand, since Roots uses locally-sourced beans from Chiang Rai, its coffee has high acidity. We liked its fruity and nutty notes, but it has a hint of sourness, which can be attributed to under-extraction.
Finally, one thing we think they should improve is the ventilation of the cafe. Even though it’s a small air-conditioned shop with an open layout, we found it quite warm and uncomfortable.
